About us

Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma was established in 1992 as a non-profit institution devoted to higher education and research in the biomedical field. The university confers degrees in Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, Nursing, and Nutrition. Furthermore, the university runs PhD programs in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Endocrinology and others. A research polyclinic is associated with the university, allowing close research cooperation between the School of Medicine & Surgery and the School of Engineering, which focuses only on Bio-engineering. The Integrated Research Center (CIR) is the research facility of UCBM that includes more than 20 biomedicine and bio-engineering research laboratories. The Laboratory of Biomedical Robotics and Bio-microsystems (head: prof. Eugenio Guglielmelli) will coordinate the MAAT project.

The Lab of Bio-medical Robotics and Bio-microsystems hosts 20+ researchers and has a solid background in human-centered design of robotic and bio-mechatronic systems, rehabilitation & assistive robotics, bio-robotics, neurorobotics and neuroengineering. The Lab has extensive experience in EU-funded R&D projects, participated in FP6, ICT e-Health, NEST and Socrates\Minerva European programmes,  and is currently participating in 4 FP7 (FET and ICT) European projects.

What motivates us

The main reason for our participation in ECHORD is the cooperation between scientific research institutions and industries in the exciting field of robotics. The two partners involved have long-term experience in upper-limb robot-aided rehabilitation and are especially interested in the 3D extension (and related technology transfer) of robot-aided rehabilitation machines.

In our experiment MAAT, we will try to find common ground between robot manufacturers and research institutions to show the benefits of current and future robotic technologies for the development of new strategies for delivering rehabilitation therapies.
